The face-down technique involves stacking pots on top of each other and firing them.
Originally, Onta ware was made using a technique of layering and firing.
It is possible to fire a large number of dishes in a small space relative to the kiln.
However, face-down baking is a very rare way of baking because it uses the space between two pieces.
One of the characteristics of these dishes is that they are baked face-down, which results in a beautiful finish without any burn marks (snake eyes) on the edges.
Snake eyes are circular burn marks that occur when multiple layers of fire are fired.
<Onta ware>
Onta ware is pottery made in the Onta-Sarayama area, located in the mountains of Hita City, Oita Prefecture.
It has a long history dating back to the Edo period, and even today all processes are done by hand without the use of machines.
We continue to use the same manufacturing methods as we did back then.
Due to these traditional pottery techniques, it has been designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan.
Unlike uniform products made by machines, our products have the unique texture that is the benefit of handmade products.
You will feel the special sensation of knowing that each item is one of a kind.
It has been loved by the local community for many years as a daily item "tableware."
We hope you will enjoy Onta ware in a variety of situations.
